The Milwaukee River Line - graduate thesis -

Built by the Chicago & North Western Railway in 1915, this 800 ton bridge replaced one built in 1890. It carried 100 steam-powered trains per day to and from the late Chicago & North Western Depot. All while turning and making way for the equally as important commerce on the river. Remaining in nearly original condition since it was built, it is one of the last standing structures associated with the historic depot.

These urban relics are Milwaukee’s heritage and can be adapted for use once more. Through minimal change to the preserved and patinaed fabric of these structures, the performance can be updated and the existing can be fitted to the modern needs of the city.

An elegant fusion of new and old. This proposal transforms Milwaukee’s dormant Railroad Bridge #1556 into The Milwaukee River Line, a park, pedestrian link, attraction, venue, and new landmark for the city.
