Operation Nausicaä: REDUX

Inspired by Hayao Miyazaki's first film "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" this study terraforms the "most irradiated, nuclear-blasted spot on the face of the earth", Yucca Flat, into a lush environment.

This colossal 15-mile ecosystem of biospheres, erected in the hundreds of craters, protects vegetation and life from the harsh climate of the Nevada desert. The sheltered flora can then grow deep into the poisoned soil and clean large amounts of radioactive isotopes from the earth by absorbing them into their tissues, slowly purifying.

While wildly unpractical, this was a fun idea to explore for "The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial" international ideas competition. I swear, we got robbed of that sustainability award.
